In August 2009, a puppy was set on fire and left to die. Luckily, this small puppy was found in a local Greensboro park nearly 2 weeks after the incident. Although near death with second and third-degree burns on over 60 percent of her body, a broken jaw and teeth, and covered in over 300 maggots, this small puppy had a will to survive. “Susie” recovered thanks to the the Guilford County Animal Shelter and soon captured the hearts of people all over the country. Susie is now living a happy, full life with her adopted mommy, Donna Lawrence in Greensboro. Together, Donna and Susie are spreading a message of hope, faith and forgiveness. Susie and her supporters worked tirelessly to get a law enacted to allow much stiffer penalties against those who abuse and neglect dogs in North Carolina.

In June 2010, NC Legislators unanimously voted to raise the penalties for those convicted of Felony Cruelty to Animals to a Class H Felony. The current misdemeanor charge of Intentionally starving an Animal in NC was elevated to a Class H Felony. “Susie’s Law” took effect on December 1, 2010.

The Guilford County Animal Shelter spent $4,000 to save Susie’s life. We are raising money at this Mala for Susie’s Miracle Fund to help other abused animals when they are surrendered so they don’t have to be euthanized.

Checks can be made payable to United Animal Coalition/Susie’s Miracle Fund. You can make a credit card donation through the studio.

Follow Susie’s Miracle Fund on Facebook.

The Africa Yoga Project uses the transformative power of yoga to empower communities and change lives. By inspiring the global yoga community into active service, AYP delivers effective and innovative programs that foster peace, improve physical, emotion and mental well-being, facilitate self-sufficiency and create opportunities to learn and contribute across the communities of East Africa.

Just over a year ago, Baron Baptiste and a team traveled to Kenya to deliver the first Level 1 Teacher Training, Journey into Power, in Kenya to 58 young people. It was a tremendous success! Since then over 40 Kenyan teachers are now employed by AYP, earning a living wage by establishing places to teach and expanding the student body. They are now delivering more than 100 classes weekly to over 2,000 people in prisons, women’s centers, primary schools, hospitals, and slums throughout Nairobi.

AYP actively supports the wider community by providing workshops on hygiene, health, computer and other necessary skills. Through the Bead for Change program, Masai women are employed and two schools have been built in their village. The list of accomplishments goes on and on!

Franklin Street Yoga Center staff will be mentoring a teacher and paying their living wage starting in January 2011.

Michelle Johnson has been selected as an AYP Ambassador. Her dream is to travel to Kenya in January of 2012 to work with teenage girls using her clinical social work skills and yoga teacher skills to provide education about post traumatic stress disorder. To make this dream a reality she needs to raise $5,000 for the Africa Yoga Project. We will be supporting Michelle’s dream by raising money for AYP in June of 2011.

Carson, a senior from Athens, Ga., and UNC-CH’s 2007-2008 student body president, was killed in March of 2008. One of her main goals as president was to create a merit-based scholarship for UNC juniors. In her memory, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in consultation with the Carson family, established the scholarship last year to honor balanced, ambitious students who have shown strong involvement in a leadership role at Carolina and have at least a 3.0 GPA in their first three undergraduate years.

The purpose of the fund is to celebrate and remember Eve’s love for the University and its students. This one-year merit scholarship was envisioned by Eve as a way to recognize individuals who began to realize their potential as leaders while attending Carolina. Students will apply for the scholarship during their junior year, with the monetary award being applied to their senior year as well as to a summer program between their junior and senior year.

Eve Marie Carson Biography

Eve Marie Carson, 22, was elected student body president at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in February 2007. Her term would have ended in April, 2008.

A native of Athens, Ga., Eve was born Nov. 19, 1985. She came to Carolina in the fall of 2004 as the recipient of a prestigious Morehead Scholarship. A member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society, she was a pre-medicine student majoring in both political science and biology. As a North Carolina Fellow, she was part of a four-year leadership development program for undergraduates.

While at UNC-Chapel Hill, she was extremely active in both leadership and service roles. As student body president, she was also a member of the UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees. She served as co-president of the Honors Program Student Executive Board and as a member of the Committee on Scholarships, Awards and Student Aide; the Academic Advising Program; and the Chancellor’s committee for University Teaching Awards.

Teaching and working with children were key service interests for Eve. In 2006, she taught science at Frank Porter Graham Elementary School in Chapel Hill as part of UNC’s INSPIRE program, whose mission is to encourage young students to pursue science as an interest. In her junior year, Carson was a tutor at Githens Middle School in Durham. She was also an assistant coach in the Girls on the Run of the Triangle, a character development program for girls ages 8-12 that uses running to teach values and a sense of self.

Eve’s service extended well beyond the Triangle, however. In the spring of her sophomore year, she participated in a study abroad in Havana, Cuba, and she spent her summers working and volunteering in Ecuador, Egypt and Ghana as part of the Morehead Summer Enrichment program. “I credit my prior experiences, especially my past two Morehead summers, for preparing me to get along with pretty much whatever comes my way,” she wrote in an e-mail posted on the Morehead Web site. On campus, she became involved in Nourish International, an organization started by UNC students in 2002 for hunger relief. Eve served as freshman volunteer coordinator (2004) and co-chair (2005) for the group.

The daughter of Bob and Teresa Carson, Eve was also the student body president of her high school, Clarke Central, in Athens, Ga. When she ran for the same office at Carolina, she was elected with 55 percent of the vote in a runoff with a bigger turnout than the previous year’s general election.
